Local know-how
A Town That Moved for the Dam
Starting in 1925, the Bureau of Reclamation relocated homes, businesses, churches and a hospital to higher ground so the American Falls Dam could be built. The reservoir behind the dam now runs more than 20 miles up the Snake River, and only the old grain elevator still stands in the water. It's an easy drive on I-86, which runs along the south side of the reservoir. Groundwater in the eastern Snake River basin is mostly calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate, according to the USGS, and those are the minerals that leave white spots when sprinkler water dries on glass.
